The 3rd graders are just having all the fun activities back to back this time of year! The fun never stops for them, which makes school a lot more exciting for them! Third Grade students held their annual Owl Pellet Day on Thursday, September 19th, 2024.
Owl Pellet Day is a creative way to teach children about vertebrates and mainly focuses on owls. The teachers find the bones from the remains of what the owls ate but cannot digest, known as a pellet, with their gizzards, an organ that is similar to a stomach. It is an opportunity to get hands-on research for the kids since it can benefit from helping them learn better, and an amazing for third grade students to experience.
Third Grade Teacher, Mrs. Jeri Bynum said, “Owl Palette Day is important because it teaches students about owls through hands-on dissection. Our students start apprehensive but quickly discover that it is fun and exciting to find bones and skeleton remains from the owl pellet. The students’ favorite part is reconnecting the bones into a skeleton and seeing their work of art.”
The most interesting part is how the students use the bones to make skeletons, get to feel the texture of the bones, and learning about where they came from. They get to clean the bones as well, helping the students understand and identify where the bones they found are located when creating the skeleton.
Third Grade Teacher, Mrs. Huggins said, “Owl Pellet Day is good for the kids because it’s their first science experiment and it is something they do once a year. They must learn about God’s creation and how He made owls.”
Owl Pellet Day is a significant day for the 3rd graders as they have the opportunity to make new friends, creatively learn new education, and even improve their learning skills through this project. Such a fun and joy-filled day for our third grade.
