PCA’s instrumental music program begins in Sixth Grade, as students are given their first opportunity to pick up an instrument and be a part of the Beginning Band. Students learn the basics of instrumental technique, learning how to assemble their instrument, posture, embouchure, and more. Beginning Band performs in two concerts throughout the year. Middle School Band is composed of Seventh and Eighth Grade students. At this level, they continue their study as repertoire increases in difficulty, with a major emphasis on musicianship. They perform in at least two concerts throughout the year, as well as being invited to play at selected football games and traveling to music festivals for competition.
Sixth Grader Levi Graham said, “ I like practicing with my friends and that I get to try something new. I love playing the Clarinet and getting better every day.” As the band practices more and more they can form a special bond that only the band can have.
Eighth Grader Everett Neumann said, “I like playing with my friends in the band and also getting to meet the high schoolers and play with them at the football games.” Some older middle schoolers have the opportunity to play with the upper school at the varsity football games. They also get a peek into what it is like to be in high school.
Sixth Grader Benjamin Acquah said, “My favorite part of the band is hanging out with my friends and getting better at playing and activating our brains and making us smarter.” When a person plays an instrument it can activate another part of the brain, which can help them in school. The band helps kids not only strengthen their skills but also create lifelong relationships.
In the end, PCA’s middle school band program not only equips students with musical skills but also strong connections and personal growth. Through collaborations in Beginning Band and Middle School Band, students build friendships, gain confidence, and experience the joys of teamwork and performance. As they travel through their musical journeys, they also improve cognitive abilities and prepare for future challenges, in both music and academics. This program helps to benefit the lives of young musicians, laying a foundation for lifelong passion and connection through their music.
