Mum and Garter is a huge tradition at most high schools in Texas. It is one of the key parts of Homecoming. Most students participate in this activity and really enjoy doing it. Some people will order off shops that sell these items like, The Mum Shop and Spotlight Homecoming Mums, or mom’s will get creative and make their own ones for their children.
Girls tend to take their mums very seriously compared to the boys. Mums are for the girls, they are a large corsage worn around the neck filled with beads, string, and so much more. Garter’s are for the boys, it is a large corsage as well but worn around the boys upper arm.
Junior Ayden Beville says, “I love partaking in this tradition and exchanging the mum and garter with my date, it makes Homecoming so much more fun and we get to wear it in the HOCO pep rally.”
One of the many things that Prestonwood Christian Academy does every year is a pep rally for HOCO. It is a chance for all freshmen through seniors to walk behind the floats and wear their mum and garters. The Lower and Middle school tend to enjoy this the most and ask so many questions about our HOCO traditions
Senior Sofia Little says, “One of my favorite things about HOCO is the mum and garter exchange, I love seeing my mum and appreciating how well my date did on it.”
The Homecoming Mum and Garter exchange takes place the Wednesday of Homecoming week. It is a great way to get pictures with your date and friends along with your own mum and garter. Mum and Garters make HOCO so much more special and it is such a special tradition that will continue for a long time.
