The PCA Speech and Debate team started off with a bang after the first competition of the year that took place at Jesuit. PCA competed against schools in nearby cities to showcase their skills in their chosen events.
Students participated in a variety of categories, including persuasive, informative, and interpretation events, as well as Congressional debate. Many did their best to score high in preliminary rounds, while others gained value in just experiencing the atmosphere and performing in front of judges and competitors.
Senior Tomilola Okunfulure, a veteran who has been in speech and debate all four years, participated in persuasive, interpretive events said “It felt great to finally put all of our practice to use. I loved helping new members and supporting them.”
This was her first time competing at a high school level. Rebbeca Villalobos said “It was a learning experience for sure. Nonetheless, I’m glad that I did this and broke out of my shell.” This first tournament has made me feel very excited for what is to come.”
Junior Logan Brown reflects on the event, saying “It was the perfect first tournament. We learned from our mistakes and will hopefully improve and grow as a team. I’m so proud to see where this group goes this year and speech and debate.”
The speech and debate team is preparing for their next tournament at Plano West for their Halloween classic. Some are already continuing to tweak their speeches for the upcoming tournament. The PCA speech and debate team is ready to rock this year!
