The Sixth Grade Honor Guard is back! The Honor Guard signifies their membership by wearing unique red shirts and they get to honor veterans and the American flag by raising the American flag each morning in front of the Middle School. These students dedicate extra time outside of school life to purposefully honor our country.
Harper Johnson said, “I enjoy Honor Guard because I love helping and serving people and giving honor to veterans.”
Each week, these students take different shifts with lowering and raising the flags. The flag is the first and last thing students, parents, staff, and visitors will see when they come and go and from school.
Christian Bodeewes said, “I am a part of the afternoon group, we help lower the flag and fold it into a triangle to put it in a drawer at the end of the day.”
In addition to flag responsibilities, students also see Honor Guard as a rite of passage in the Sixth Grade. Oftentimes their siblings have experienced being a member as well and pass down the legacy.
Piper Garrison said, “My siblings did it and liked it, that’s why I wanted to do it too.”
While Honor Guard is an important part of each morning and afternoon, this special group also finds it an enjoyable part of their day to honor the country and to serve veterans. They are excited each morning and afternoon to put up and take down the flag.
