This year has already been filled with two state champions including volleyball and boys basketball. Another team that gets to be added to that conversation is the boys soccer team. The championship game took place in Round Rock, Texas where the game went all the way to penalty kicks in 5-4 win.

In order to be prepared for the game the team had to prepare on and off the field.

“I had to work on touch drills and a bunch of drills that were made for me whether it was shooting or positioning.” said Junior Goalkeeper Caleb Harris.

As a goalkeeper there are things that you have to do differently than a field player. Due to students going on mission trips for Minimester, many players were not able to play.

“Since we had only 11 players and no substitutions, we had to get everyone in shape so that they could play a full game.” said Sophomore Eli Taylor.

For many people winning a state championship is a bittersweet feeling.

“I was exhilarated when we won state.” said Freshman Caleb Rose.

“It was a good feeling because that’s what was expected of us since we went undefeated in district.” said Eli.

“It’s been 12 years since we last won a state championship so to be able to do that with the assistant coaches that helped win that championship was an amazing experience.” said Junior Ben Baldwin.

Now that the boys were able to take this state championship home, it is time to start preparing for next year. A good team always needs a great captain.

“Next year we have to work hard and find someone who can fill our captain role since our captain is a senior this year and will be leaving.” says Junior Benjamin Bower.

In order for a team to be successful there must be great team chemistry. Since this team has won a championship, the chemistry must be off the charts. This has been long awaited because the last time boys soccer won a state championship was in 2010. The boys were long overdue for some hardware.

“Winning state brought us closer together because we all got to experience it and it’s something we can talk about for the rest of our lives.” said Senior Troop O’Neal.

Winning a state championship is such a huge accomplishment and is something that can be shared for a lifetime. It brings people together and celebrates the victories won.
