H2OCO: A Mum with a Purpose

H2OCO%3A+A+Mum+with+a+Purpose

H2OCO has become an annual tradition for the PCA student body during Homecoming. It is a tradition that was started in 2017 by PCA Alumna Courtney Villa. Courtney had a passion to bring clean water to people in impoverished countries who do not have access to healthy drinking water. This fundraiser is a fun, simple, and easy way to help those in need while also celebrating the festivities of Homecoming. “My heart behind H2OCO was giving our students a significant voice in leading the movement to provide clean water for all humans, everywhere. When you give students an opportunity to care deeply about something, they will embrace the movement as their own,” said Courtney.

The sale of fresh flower leis has provided six new water wells to the people of Uganda over the past two years. Each year, students have bought enough leis to build two water wells in Uganda. The fulfillment that people feel when they know that they are helping people in need is a unique driving force. “I chose to buy a lei because they are gorgeous, smell good, and help benefit the people in Uganda who do not have easy access to clean water,” said Junior Suzie Brewer.

Each lei is delicately crafted with fresh flowers that make the hallways smell like a bouquet of flowers. They are typically a purple-pink color and are a fun way to easily participate in Homecoming. Buying a beautiful lei not only adds a special touch to any outfit, but it benefits a great cause.

Junior Haley Stephens sees buying a lei as an opportunity to help out other people in an accessible way. “My favorite part about H2OCO is that by making a small donation in return for a lei, we are able to make a difference in the world and help others who do not live in good circumstances,” said Haley. H2OCO is a way to bring students together through an act of service.

Students in Upper School participate in a fun and giving project by purchasing leis. Junior Bria Stephens bought a lei for Homecoming this year and plans on buying one again next year. “I decided to participate in H2OCO because I wanted to help out the communities in Uganda that are not as privileged as myself to be able to have easy access to clean water,” said Bria.

H2OCO has proven to be a mainstay among the Homecoming traditions and an important one at that, because it helps people in Uganda to improve their quality of life. The Upper School students hope to carry on the tradition for years to come. Junior Kenzie French loves H2OCO and wants the tradition to continue for years. “I wish for H2OCO to continue because during Homecoming week, we get so consumed with making sure everything is good and perfect for our weekend and H2OCO is a good reminder to help others and remember those in need,” said Kenzie.
