Take a Staycation

Staying home for Spring Break? Make the most of it with these ideas for in-state fun.
Take+a+Staycation

Some people go out of town for Spring Break, but others stick around here. For the ones staying home, here’s the Big D guide to staycation fun.

Into marine life? There’s the Dallas World Aquarium. See otters, penguins, sharks and much more. Check the website, www.dwazoo.com, ahead of time for feeding times. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and tickets are $20.95 for adults and $14.95 for children.

Sophomore Izaiah Jackson said, “That sounds like a great idea. I’m always looking to see something new.”

For animals on dry land, the Dallas Zoo invites those looking for a wild time. See the Giants of the Savannah, the Wilds of Africa and the Hippo Outpost all in one day. Daily hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets for those age 12-64 are just $15.00 and for children ages 3-11 pay only $12.00. On Saturday, March 10, there is a special family safari night hike to see the animals up close ($20 per person).

To save gas, take the DART train to the zoo for an added experience. Catch the train at the Parker Road Station near Parker Road and Central Expressway. The cost is only $5 for a round trip ticket.

Like adventure, taking risks and riding high up in the sky? Then go to Six Flags Over Texas located in Arlington, Texas.  They are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are a little pricey, but sometimes that is what it takes to have a solid day of fun. Hit the Giant, the Titan, Batman and Mr. Freeze for a rush. Tickets run $78.99 at the park, but run $60.99 online in advance.

Freshman Hannah Stoutmire said, “I will be in town, and that sounds fun. I’ll find a group of friends to go with me.”

The Perot Museum in Downtown Dallas is a combination of art, science and robotics all in one. Plenty of excitement and wonders never end. Monday – Saturday the hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults tickets are $34.00 and Youth (2-17) tickets are $25.00.

Texas Tulips in Pilot Point is one of the beautiful examples of God’s creation. Spring is here so that means the flowers are blooming. Fields and fields of flowers are there for visitors to enjoy. What’s even more special is for $2.50 a stem, guests may pick the tulips and take them home. Monday – Sunday the fields are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The entrance fee is only $3.00 per person.

Enjoy nature and working out? The Katy Trail in Dallas offers park-like scenery coupled with a trail for biking and jogging. The 3.5-mile trail runs from Travis and Knox on the north end to Reverchon Park on the south end. The park hours are 5 a.m. to midnight. The Katy Trail is free. Enjoy exercise and nature for free.

Creative and Artistic? Visit Board and Brush Workshop in Plano. Create a wood sign with a monogram, Bible verse or holiday theme. Go as a walk in or visit www.boardandbrush.com and make a reservation. Projects range from $35 up.

Sports fans grab your jersey and take in a game. The Dallas Mavericks play the Grizzlies, March 10 and the Rockets, March 11. Tickets start at $12. For basketball fans, this might just be a good move.

While enjoying a staycation, take a road trip down to Austin. The state capital has many things to do as well. For night owls, see a bat cave at dusk and watch as bats fly from the cave going to find their meals. Movie producers are constantly making movies throughout the day in town. Absolutely make time to stop by Graffiti Park for pictures and feel free to add any colorful art ideas to the wall.

For shoppers, visit Allen Premium Outlets for a day of deal hunting. The shops are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Stop by Adidas, American Eagle, Finish Line, J. Crew and Kate Spade to see what’s on sale. Go while the weather is good because the stores are connected by sidewalks. Invite friends and family and have fun.

Last but not least, have fun at home. Just kick those feet up, make popcorn and relax. Watch a favorite TV show or find something new on Netflix. Stay up late, play games or learn to make a new recipe, because now is your chance. Keep in mind that school is not over any time soon, so relax and enjoy the break while you can.
